If you are running phpGrid against MS SQL, you may need to create conf.php manually and specifically create SERVER_ROOT value in conf.php. Please see manual instruction https://phpgrid.com/documentation/installation/
Find out what exactly 500 (server error) in php log. You can find out the path of error log with phpinfo.
